If you need to verify that your iOS apps are sending and receiving the appropriate data, or if you want to make sure your favorite apps are not uploading your personal information to their servers without your consent, I recommend Charles. Follow these steps and you'll be up and running in no time.

Charles is an HTTP proxy / HTTP monitor / Reverse Proxy that enables a developer to view all of the HTTP and SSL / HTTPS traffic between their machine and the Internet.   1. Download and install Charles ($50, 30-day free trial, not an affiliate link). Supercal 1 2 4 download free.

  2. Turn on Wi-Fi on your computer and connect to your network.

  3. Launch Network Utility (in Applications/Utilities).

  5. Connect your iPhone/iPad to that same Wi-Fi network.

  7. Go to your iPhone/iPad Wi-Fi settings and tap on the disclosure arrow next to the network you're connected to.

  8. Scroll all the way down, and under HTTP Proxy, tap on Manual.

  9. In the Server field, enter the IP address from step 4. In the Port field, enter 8888.

  10. Quit and relaunch Charles.

  11. Go to any website in Safari on your iOS device. You should see a connection request in Charles. Click Allow. You should now be able to capture all traffic from your iPhone/iPad in Charles.

  12. You can search for specific data via the Filter field. http://mvlmbhg.xtgem.com/Blog/__xtblog_entry/19156488-mac-game-earth-2140-1-0-0#xt_blog. If you don't see a Filter field, make sure you are in Sequence view (keyboard shortcut: command-0), as opposed to Structure view.

Charles can be used as a man-in-the-middle HTTPS proxy, enabling you to view in plain text the communication between your iOS app and the SSL web server.

Share WiFi & Setup Charles for SSL

Follow the steps below to setup Charles to enable SSL testing using Charles 3.10.x.

  1. Share your ethernet internet connection via WiFi, Settings > Sharing
    You can see that you are sharing your internet connection if your WiFi has an up arrow within it.
  2. Download Charles: http://www.charlesproxy.com/download/ (free trial)
  3. Open Charles
  4. Go to Proxy > SSL Proxy Settings…
  5. Check 'Enable SSL Proxying'
  6. Select 'Add' and enter the host name and port (if needed)
  7. Click ok and make sure the option is checked
  8. Download the Charles cert, go to Help > SSL Proxying > Install Charles Root Certificate on a Mobile Device or Remote Browser

    The following popup will appear to let you know what proxy url to setup in the next step:

  9. Configure your device to use Charles as its HTTP proxy, WiFi > Select your network > tap the i for the details
  10. Modify the HTTP proxy to point to the IP address of the proxy as shown above.
  11. Open Safari on your iOS device and go to http://charlesproxy.com/getssl to install the Charles Certificate.
  12. Install the Certificate on your device when prompted

Testing SSL in your App

Now that Charles is setup and the connection between your app and your computer is working you can start to test the SSL calls within your app.

  1. Open Charles and click the Trash can to clear the current session
  2. Click on the URL of the host service you would like to see details on
  3. Click 'Sequence' to see the details and scroll down until you see the URL of the host you wish to see the response details for.
  4. Double click on the line for the popup to appear so you can copy any values you need.
